Most American homes don’t have a lighting problem. They have a color temperature problem.

The whole decision, no spec sheet:

  • 2500-2700K — warm, slightly amber. Living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms. This is the US residential default, and it’s back at the front of design trends for 2026.
  • 3000K — soft white. Kitchens, bathrooms, anywhere you need to see what you’re doing.
  • 3500-4000K — neutral. Hallways, laundry rooms, home office.
  • 5000-6500K — daylight, a little blue. Garages and workbenches. That’s it.

The mistake almost everyone makes: buying the “brightest” bulb for the living room. Bright and cool are two different things. If your living room feels cold and clinical at night, you don’t need a dimmer — you need a 2700K bulb.

One more rule: don’t mix color temperatures in the same room. You can mix brightness. Mixing temperature just reads as accidental.
