The warm glow on restaurant tables is now a $39.99 IKEA lamp. Cordless lighting finally grew up in 2026.

Rechargeable table lamps spent years as hotel-patio equipment — practical, forgettable, slightly camping-gear. This year they crossed over: design studios built entire lamp families around the cordless format at Milan Design Week, and IKEA put a designer cordless lamp in its PS 2026 collection plus a weather-tolerant outdoor version (the AVHÅLL) at $39.99. When IKEA adopts a format, the format is mainstream.

Why it works at home: light goes where outlets aren’t. The bookshelf with no plug, the dining table where you want to kill the harsh overhead, the balcony, the darkest corner of the living room. In fall, add one more use — a charged lamp that moves with you during outages beats a phone flashlight.

The buy checklist, so you don’t get a dim novelty:

  • Battery: 8 hours minimum at a usable setting — 12 is better. Check whether the claim is at low or full brightness.
  • USB-C charging, touch dimming, and a 2700-3000K warm output
  • Brightness: 100-200 lumens for ambiance, 200-400 for a dining table or reading nook
  • IP44 rating minimum if it will ever sit outside or near a sink

Typical US retail: $39.99 at IKEA; designer versions from specialty brands run well into three figures. Treat any of them as an accent layer, not room lighting — these are atmosphere tools, and the best placement is wherever you actually sit after dark.
