Recessed lighting was the American default for thirty years. It’s also why so many living rooms feel like conference rooms.
Downlights spray even, shadowless light from above. That’s the right tool for a hallway. In a room where you actually sit and live, it flattens everything — no depth, no warmth, no focal point.
What’s replacing it in 2026 is layers:
- One overhead fixture with presence — a pendant, a chandelier, a flush mount worth looking at
- Wall sconces at eye level — the most flattering height for faces, and almost nobody uses it
- A floor lamp in the darkest corner
- A table lamp or two where you actually sit
Four light sources at low output will beat one source at full blast. Every time.
You don’t have to rip anything out. Just stop using your recessed lights as the only light. Add one floor lamp and one table lamp tonight and watch the room change.
