Everyone says “just get Matter.” Nobody tells you how to decide. Here are three questions that actually settle it.
- Do your lights stop working when the internet drops? Then you don’t have smart lighting — you have remote-controlled lighting. Thread runs a local mesh, so the wall switch still works when your router doesn’t.
- Do you already own a Thread border router? An Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, or newer Echo can act as one. If you own none, budget for it before you buy Thread bulbs.
- Starting fresh, or adding to existing gear? Starting from zero in 2026 → Matter over Thread. Adding to a working Zigbee setup (Hue, IKEA) → stay where you are. Don’t rebuild a working system for a spec sheet.
What Matter genuinely fixes: one bulb, any ecosystem. Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings. No lock-in, no “that brand only works with its own app.”
What it does not fix: bad light quality, the wrong color temperature, or a fixture that’s too small for your table. Those still matter more than any protocol.
