Integrated LED means no bulb, ever — no socket, no swap. Know what you’re agreeing to before it’s on your ceiling.

The LEDs in these fixtures are soldered to boards inside. Rated life is typically around 50,000 hours — 17+ years at 8 hours a day. That’s the trade for the slim profiles and clean ceilings the format makes possible.

But here’s what the box doesn’t say: the LEDs are rarely what dies first. The driver — the power supply converting your 120V to what the diodes need — usually gives out before the chips do. In many fixtures it’s a replaceable module: swapping a driver is often a $15-20 part, versus replacing a $100+ fixture. That one line in the spec sheet decides whether a failure is a repair or a tear-out. Look for “replaceable driver” or “field-replaceable light engine.”

The 4-line buy checklist for integrated fixtures:

  • Warranty: 5 years minimum. Many mainstream fixtures carry exactly that; longer is a signal the maker trusts its driver.
  • Driver access. Replaceable module beats sealed box, every time.
  • Dimmer compatibility. Integrated fixtures need LED-rated dimmers (CL/ELV type); a legacy incandescent dimmer causes buzz and flicker.
  • Where to skip the format: rentals, rooms you redesign often, anywhere you might want a different color temperature later. A socket-and-bulb fixture keeps those doors open.

One habit from the pros: installing several matching fixtures — kitchen cans, a hallway row? Buy one spare at the same time. Manufacturers discontinue models, and matching your ceiling in 2032 is the hard part.
