There’s a sizing rule designers use that almost no homeowner knows: a dining room fixture should be about half to two-thirds the width of the table.
A 36-inch table? Your fixture should be roughly 18 to 24 inches wide. Most people buy something closer to 12.

Two more numbers:
- Hang it 30 to 36 inches above the table surface. Not the floor — the table.
- For an entryway or stairwell, scale up. A fixture that fills the vertical space almost always looks better than one that floats in it.
Why showroom fixtures look right and yours doesn’t: showrooms are larger, and the fixtures are staged with the right proportions. Measure your table before you shop and bring the number with you.
This is the cheapest change on this entire list. It’s also the one guests notice first.
