Renters get told to “add a floor lamp.” Here’s the actual playbook — no wiring, no drilling beyond one hook, everything leaves with you.

  1. Plug-in pendant over the darkest corner. The one 2026 rental-friendly trend with real momentum: swag-style plug-in pendants hang from a single ceiling hook, the cord drapes along the wall, and you get a statement fixture without an electrician. Typical US retail: 80.
  2. Smart bulbs in the two lamps you actually use. At 14 per bulb (typical US retail), a Wi-Fi bulb turns any old lamp dimmable and schedulable from your phone. Evening auto-dim to 2700K is the single biggest coziness upgrade per dollar in a rental.
  3. Removable LED strip under kitchen cabinets. Adhesive, plug-in, gone in ten minutes when you move. It fixes the worst lighting in most rentals: the single ceiling fixture over the sink.
  4. Keep the originals. Box the apartment’s builder-grade bulbs and fixtures, label the box, swap everything back at move-out.

Rule of thumb: every change must survive the security deposit check. If it can’t be undone with a screwdriver, it doesn’t go on the wall.
