One wall flip from a guest can take your smart bulbs offline for days. Here’s when switches beat bulbs.

The most common smart lighting complaint isn’t technology. It’s this: someone flips the wall switch off, the bulb loses power, and every schedule, scene, and voice command goes dark until someone flips it back. Kids, guests, partners — it happens daily in most homes.

The decision rule that settles it: count the bulbs on each switch.

1-2 bulbs in lamps you control → smart bulbs. Screw in, done, no wiring. This is also the renter’s only option — no electrical work in a rental, ever. Typical US retail: $8-30 per bulb.

A vanity with 6 bulbs, a chandelier with 8, a room of recessed cans → smart switch. One switch ($15-60 typical US retail) controls the whole circuit, keeps the wall switch working normally, and lets you use standard LED bulbs forever. A 6-bulb room costs roughly $48-180 in smart bulbs versus $30-120 for switches — and switches outlast bulbs by years.

Before buying any switch: check for a neutral wire. Kill the breaker, remove the plate, look for a bundle of white wires capped together in the back of the box. Most smart switches need it. Homes built before the 1980s often don’t have one at every switch — a few switch models work without, so check the spec sheet first.

The pros’ setup is hybrid: switches for whole rooms, smart bulbs only where color matters — lamps, accents, one reading nook.

Check your three most-used switches tonight and count what’s behind them. That number picks the technology for you.
